Teaching Excellence Award to Dr Mandeep Sagoo

Congratulations to Dr Mandeep Sagoo of the Anatomy Department who has received a GKT Medical Education Teaching Excellence Award.

Mandeep teaches topographic anatomy across undergraduate programmes and is lead for the second year module in Synthetic Anatomy.

More Guardian league table success for Anatomy at King's

King's Anatomy and Physiology has risen to 4^th overall in the UK Guardian University league table for 2019.

This follows steady progress up the rankings in the last six years

Bridge building

Thye Anatomy Department is successfully building important clinical links with surgeons and other doctors to combine knowledge and be at the forefront of training these clinicians. For instance, we are training GP's through KUMEC, the very GP's that are teaching our undergraduate medics on the 2020 curriculum. We are also starting a multidisciplinary surgical faculty that will undertake their own training in the anatomy department, e.g. practicing reconstructive techniques, teaching our students in surgical anatomy and offering surgical science projects. Why Look at the small stuff

I remember when I first wanted to be a doctor. Whilst all medical science interests me, it was always anatomy that was my focus of interest. I bought a light microscope from a shop in Slough and immediately went to work on looking at everything that I could. A still have a microscope on my desk. The subject of histology is a fascinating one; a view in to hidden world, secret gems of structure that not only look wonderful, but reveal and give clues to how structure relates to function. The anatomy department at Kings is still committed to delivering quality histology teaching and so it should. Please contact me if you want to know more. We have excellent histology facilities.

The importance of gross anatomy

I've been around quite a while now and heard the arguments come and go for the relevance of gross anatomy teaching, especially when it comes to cadaveric based teaching. We use cadavers at King's and we take our gross anatomical teaching seriously. It may be of interest that the Royal College of Surgeons has just increased its Part A exam from 45 to 75 anatomy questions. This is to address the obvious need for surgeons in training to have more anatomical knowledge and to place the emphasis on the important of anatomical knowledge.

NEW Sports Exercise degree coming soon

A brand NEW degree course starts at King's next year. The Anatomy Department will be teaching the vital anatomical knowledge for students on this course. Working with The Aerospace Department, we will are excited to be delivering anatomy to a sector of learners from ever diversifying disciplines. If you'd like to be involved with he teaching or want any more information then just drop me a line.

3D Anatomy printing

A new, innovative and exciting course in 3D anatomy printing will start next term. There are already many applications of 3D printing in medicine and surgery and it is a useful adjunct teaching and imaging method too. Students will be on the "journey" of development and reflection on the course. This is exciting I believe and opens the doors of this technology to merge with more traditional methods of anatomical working parts and learning.

The King's Anatomy Department

Did you know that as well as educating thousands of our undergraduate students every year, that the department is responsible and involved with educating surgeons, doctors, osteopaths, specialist nurses and many many other health professionals. These people travel from all over the globe, literally, for our expertise and facilities. The Anatomy department is now working with the very GP's that teach our undergraduates and teaching those GP's in clinical anatomy. Drake Vogl lecture KCL Anatomical society

Please note that there is an informative lecture by Dr Drake and Dr Vogl scheduled for Monday 25^th Sept at 5:30pm in NHH LT2.  Although aimed at students, it would be beneficial for staff to attend as well.  There will be drinks (wine/tea/coffee) and nibbles served afterwards.   The event is hosted by the KCL Anatomical Society and sponsored by Elsevier.

Lecture in Life Sciences: Animals and their pathologists in London, c1850-1900

Prof Abigail Woods, Head of the Dept of the History of Human and Animal Health. 

This talk uses the surviving records of the once-thriving Pathological Society of London to explore the place of animals in the history of human medicine. These records reveal the many wild, domesticated, farmed and exotic animal pathologies that doctors studied, described and exhibited to each other. They show that in a 19th century world in which doctors lived, worked and played with animals, medicine was far more zoological in character than it is today.

Widening Participation Grant to Anatomy Department

King's College London has awarded a widening participation grant to an Anatomy Department team led by Dr Gillian Sales to run schools workshops in the Museum of Life Sciences. In addition to introducing pupils to university, the grant aims to train undergraduate and graduate students as widening participation ambassadors

National Student Survey gives strong support to Anatomy

Thank you to all our final year students who completed the National Student Survey for 2016. Overall satisfaction with teaching was an outstanding 93% reflecting the concerted efforts of our academics to provide excellent anatomy teaching and deliver the best BSc curriculum in the UK

Higher Education Academy recognition for Anatomy teachers

Congratulations to Anatomy academics, Dr Darren Williams, Dr Laura Andreae and Dr Claire Wells who have been recognised for their teaching with the award of Fellowships of the Higher Education Academy, and to Dr Richard Wingate who becomes a Senior Fellow.

Media Fellowship to Professor Ivor Mason

Professor Ivor Mason has been awarded a 2016 British Science Association Media Fellowship, placed at The I newspaper and sponsored by The Wellcome Trust.
